For button size, please measure the outer largest diameter from one edge of the button across to the other. For domed buttons it is easier to measure across the flat back of the button.

Standard button sizes. If you’re creating a classic garment, there may be a standard size for the buttons you include. For instance, the average button size for a man’s shirt will have 13L (8mm) buttons on the collar, 16L (10mm) on the cuffs and 16L (10mm) to 20L (12.5mm) on the button placket. Men’s suits usually have a 24L (15mm) button on the jacket cuff and trouser and 32L (20mm) buttons to fasten the jacket.
Buttonhole size. As a general rule, buttonholes should be 3mm bigger than the button diameter.
