To determine the correct button size, measure the largest outer diameter from one edge to the other. For domed buttons, it is often easier to measure across the flat back for a more accurate reading

Standard button sizes. If you’re creating a classic garment, there may be a standard size for the buttons you include. For instance, the average button size for a man’s shirt will have 13L (8mm) buttons on the collar, 16L (10mm) on the cuffs and 16L (10mm) to 20L (12.5mm) on the button placket. Men’s suits usually have a 24L (15mm) button on the jacket cuff and trouser and 32L (20mm) buttons to fasten the jacket.

Buttonhole size. As a general rule, buttonholes should be 3mm bigger than the button diameter.
